Shimano's asymmetrical HG-X 10-speed chain is a marked improvement over older, symmetrical chains. It makes faster, more precise shifts. And it is at its absolute best when paired with double cranks like the Shimano XT FC-M785 Crankset. It's a Dyna-Sys double crankset and is 10-speed specific. It works so well simply because the middle ring is not there. Where the middle must do double duty with the chain climbing and dropping in both directions as you shift through the range, this double crank design has a little ring that's designed exclusively to allow the chain to go to the big. Likewise, the big ring only has to allow the chain to drop to the small ring. It's faster and offers more chain security.
This faster shifting is a boon to racers and spirited riders who might find some of the available gear options of the 3x10 setup to be redundant or unnecessary. And why carry around gears you don't use, right? For many folks, 2x10 drivetrains make a lot of sense as they are lighter and simpler.
Like its M770 predecessor, the aluminum M785 crank is a Hollowtech II design. This ensures strength, stiffness, and light weight. The hollow steel 24mm spindle will fit easily into any bottom bracket shell configuration, and these days that is a big plus. Installation is easy, and perfect bearing preload is easy to achieve. Once set, the two pinch bolts on the left-side crankarm clamp it all in place for security. There's not a simpler or more effective system on the market.
The Shimano XT FC-M785 Crankset is available with 40/28 or 38/26 chain ring combos set on a 104/64mm bolt circle diameter. It's available in 165-180mm lengths in 5mm increments. An English threaded bottom bracket is included.
