• Pioneer Shimano Ultegra 8000 Single-Leg Power Meter

Pioneer has expanded their watt-measuring lineup to include lower-cost Shimano Ultegra R8000 adapted cranks. This is their SGY-LT80 Series Power Meter. This is a single-arm meter that replaces the left crankarm on your Shimano Ultegra R8000 crankset. It’s inexpensive to buy, easy to install, works great, and is upgradable.

If you know Pioneer’s, yes the audio company, SGY-LT90 Power Meter, this is virtually identical. Accuracy is still +/- 2%. They’ve taken the same electronics you find on that left crankarm, and have installed them onto an Ultegra arm. You get the same reliability, the same accuracy, the only difference is the less expensive and slightly-heavier Ultegra arm replacing the Dura-Ace R9100 arm.

In case you’re not familiar, here’s the story. The electronics, weighing 22g, are applied to the inside of the arm. The unit is turned on by a frame-mounted magnet, and send twelve ANT+ signals per crank revolution out into the ether to be picked up by an ANT+-compatible head unit, tablet, smartphone, or computer, including Pioneer’s own. Two kinds of magnets come with the crank, making it almost a certainty that this arm will work with your bike no matter how it’s built. The electronics are powered by a single, user-replaceable CR2032 watch battery, available at just about every convenience store you ride by, offers about 180 hours of life per battery. Ride ten hours a week, and you can figure that a three-month replacement interval is safe.

The Ultegra R8000 arm is modified from stock. Crank lengths available are:165, 170, 172.5, and 175mm. The arm meshes aesthetically with the R8000 group, but is really compatible with just about any Shimano thru-axle crankset. If there’s a limitation, it will be with the unit coming too close to the left chainstay or an under-the-bottom bracket brake. As the unit measures 92.5mm long by 34.7mm wide by 8.7mm deep, as long as you have 1cm of clearance between your current arm and the bike, you should be ok.

As mentioned above, you can upgrade this left-leg only meter to a dual-leg meter. They call that upgrade SGY-PMRTC aka Power Meter Right Crank. You send them your right crankarm, and they’ll apply the electronics and send it back.

The Pioneer SGY-LT80 Series Power Meter comes with the crankarm, magnet, two mounting methods, a CR2032 battery, and a user’s manual.
