• Sram XX1 Eagle BB30 Crankset

When creating the Eagle group, SRAM engineers realized that their Exogram crankarms weren’t light enough, and, as they wanted direct-mount chainrings to mate with the crank, they didn’t need a spider. The result is this new XX1 Eagle GXP crankset, which tips the scales at 465g for the 175mm arms and 32-tooth X-Sync 2 Chainring.

The arms are hollow, and precisely wrapped with carbon-fiber, a method they call Carbon-Tuned. It’s not designed to be used in gravity-assisted disciplines, but for cross-country and trail riding. No reason to carry the bulk around if you don’t need it. The stiffness-to-weight ratio is unrivaled.

Helping save weight, add drivetrain efficiency, and improve that all-important simplicity, are the direct-mount chainrings. Held by T25 Torx bolts and several splines, the X-Sync 2 rings bolt into the right crankarm. They’re forged and CNC-machined aluminum with a new tooth profile. SRAM found that most chainrings basically hold the chain at the first few teeth where the chain meshes with the ring. That leads to wear and inefficiency. So the new design holds the chain all the way around. The teeth are designed to not only keep the chain on with an alternating tooth profile, but the positive-rake teeth also held mud and grit come out of the chain as it moves around the ring. An added benefit to the new tooth design is quieter interaction. Sizes are 30-38 teeth in two-tooth increments.

The X-Sync 2 rings are designed to work with Eagle twelve-speed chains, but can be used with SRAM 1x 11-speed systems. If you’re coming from a 1x eleven-speed, go with a two-tooth larger chainring to have both a higher high and lower low than you did before.

The thru-axle on this crankset is a BB30, which is to write that it is 30mm in diameter and is supposed to work with bottom bracket shells 68-73mm wide. It also works with the PF30 standard. You might be able to find a conversion bottom bracket which mates this crank with a threaded bottom bracket shell, but SRAM makes no promises on that. The chainline is 49.0mm.

The SRAM XX1 Eagle BB30 Crankset is the lightest way to mate a 1x crank with the light BB30 bottom bracket standard.
