• Shimano Xtr Fc-M9000-2 Crankset

To suit different rider preferences and needs, Shimano offers their new XTR crankset in two versions again this year. The Race version is what we have here for those who value less weight over perhaps unused additional gear options. And while this Shimano XTR M9000-2 Crankset does have two chain rings, it is designed with all the latest Shimano technology to ensure that you'll be lamenting mistakes at the dinner table rather than poor equipment choice if you aren't at the front of the field on tough climbs.

One major difference between Race and Trail versions of XTR M9000 cranks is the Q-factor. This Race crank is 158mm wide at the pedal interface where the Trail version is 168mm. This means that you can get a narrower stance on the pedals, more akin to your typical road bike setup. These low-profile arms are cold forged and assembled from separate inner and outer pieces to form one bonded, super-strong and ultra-light hollow structure. This is what makes them impossibly light and stiff.

With the proven success of this design, they applied similar bonding techniques to make the composite big chain ring. Believe it or not, but it's made of titanium teeth, a hollow forged aluminum outer half, and a carbon fiber inner half. They say the sum is greater than the individual parts, and this is true here. This design is stiffer than the last XTR big chain ring to ensure ultra-fast upshifts, and the titanium offers greater durability than alloy chain ring teeth. The four-arm spider is new for this M9000 generation and bears a special bolt pattern to mate with the re-designed chain rings. Like the latest Dura-Ace parts, XTR now uses a spider with arms that are set at 70° and 110° apart. The altered spacing optimizes chain ring stability when you put maximum power to the pedals by moving each set of two arms closer together at the top of the chain ring when you're in the power zone of your pedal stroke.

Shimano places an emphasis on reducing the steps between gears with the new XTR. It is apparent on their M9000 cassette and also on this crankset. All three options have a 10-tooth difference between the big and small ring. This helps you maintain your pedaling rhythm as you hammer down the trail and search for that just-right gear for the moment. The chain rings are designed for the 11-speed M9000 asymmetrical chain for best performance; put all the right parts together and feel the magic.

The Shimano XTR M9000-2 Crankset is sexier than ever. And at 619 grams, it's a lightweight superstar with the same legendary toughness that you've grown to appreciate from Shimano's top spec parts. Please note: the bottom bracket is sold separately.
