• Shimano Xtr Fc-M980 Trail Crankset

Shimano first introduced their Dyna-Sys 10-speed system on the workhorse XT group. It was so well-received that they carried the system to XTR shortly after. The Shimano XTR FC-M980 Trail Crankset is the first 10-speed specific XTR triple crank. Like previous XTR cranks, it uses Shimano's cold forging process to create the hollow aluminum crankarms. This produces lighter and stronger parts than solid forgings. It saves a whopping 100 grams over the XT M780 crankset. With this being the centerpiece of the beautiful XTR groupset, no expense is spared to create the best-looking and best-performing crank possible.

The hollow forging process isn't limited to the crankarms either. The big chain ring is hollow aluminum and super sexy á la Dura-Ace. While pretty, it is also lighter and stiffer, and the stiffer 3D shape makes for faster shifts and better transmission of power to the rear wheel. The chain ring shaping is optimized for use with Shimano's XTR HG-X 10-speed chain. The combo of revised notch and pin placement on the chain rings along with the asymmetrical shaping of the chain makes the front shifting better than ever. The middle ring is a carbon-titanium composite. Like the hollow big ring, the design adds rigidity for better shifting and power transmission.

The XTR M980 crank is lighter than the previous XTR M970 crank by 50 grams, and the design reverts back to the Shimano pinch bolt system to fix the left side crankarm to the splined Hollowtech II spindle. This means no more threaded preload collar. We like the pinch bolt design because it separates the bearing preload from securing the crankarm to the spindle. This way you can achieve the perfect bearing preload, then fix the crank to the spindle in a secure manner without affecting the smooth operation of the bottom bracket.

The Shimano XTR FC-M980 Trail Crankset has a 42/32/24 chain ring configuration. It comes with an XTR Hollowtech II English threaded bottom bracket. The triple crank is perfect if you want a super wide range of gears for varied terrain.
