Shimano XTR FC-M9020-2 Crankset
The Shimano XTR M9020-2 Crankset is a masterpiece of engineering that provided lightness, strength, and durability all in one. It checks all the materials boxes - carbon fiber, titanium, aluminum, hardened steel. This is the XTR Trail crank, and it's the one you need if you run multiple chain rings and want to have the option of three. Configured here it's a double crank, hence the "-2" designation.
This XTR M9020 Trail crank differs from the Race versions in that it has this ability to run one, two, or three chain rings where the Race crank can run one or two. Because of this, it also has a wider Q-factor. The M9000 Race crank is 158mm wide at the pedal interface where this M9020 Trail crank is 168mm - typical of most MTB cranks. The crankarms are cold forged and assembled from separate inner and outer pieces to form one bonded, super-strong and ultra-light hollow structure. This is what makes them impossibly light and stiff.
With the proven success of this design, they applied similar bonding techniques to make the composite big chain ring. It is made of a toothed titanium ring, a hollow forged aluminum outer wall, and a carbon fiber inner portion. They say the sum is greater than the individual parts, and this is true here. This design is stiffer than the previous XTR big chain ring to ensure optimum power transfer while retaining the lightness you want. The titanium teeth offer great durability as well.
The four-arm spider is new for this M9000 generation and bears a special bolt pattern to mate with the re-designed chain rings. Like the latest Dura-Ace parts, XTR now uses a spider with arms that are set at 70° and 110° apart. The altered spacing optimizes chain ring stability when you put maximum power to the pedals by moving each set of two arms closer together at the top of the chain ring when you're in the power zone of your pedal stroke.
The Shimano XTR M9020-2 Crankset is designed to be paired with the 11-speed M9000 asymmetrical chain for best shifting performance. Please note: the bottom bracket is sold separately.
